Home About Heindl History

1953: Confiserie Heindl, an Austrian family enterprise, was founded in Vienna ’s 5th district. The master confectioner, Walter Heindl senior, began with his wife Maria to manufacture liqueur chocolates and confectionary. His own creations are famous today as classic Viennese confectionary.

1967: due to the continuing rise in turnover, the company´s premises was transferred to Vienna ’s 23 rd district and production extended. The Heindls may have at first supplied only the specialist trade in Vienna, but the importance of a second further sales outlet soon became apparent and their own branches, with locations in the most frequented shopping streets and shopping centres, were established. With the opening in 1973 of the first branch in Vienna ’s 12 th district, the cornerstone was laid for the nation-wide network of branches of today.

1987: the sons Walter, confectioner, and Andreas, master patissier, took over their parents’ firm. Under their management, the range was extended to what now includes over 190 different products; turnover was multiplied in only a few years and the network of branches extended.

2001 the extension of the branch network, which has been forced during the last years, and the constantly rising demand for quality products in the confectionary sector, also made necessary the expansion of the House of Heindl’s head office in Vienna ’s 23rd district . In an area of about 4,000 m2, one of the most modern plants for production of the finest confectionary specialities was created in 2001. Three production lines, with a total length of 140 m, will guarantee even more flexible production capacities of about 70 million items of confectionary annually; even short-term, large orders can be fulfilled within two to three working days. the "Pischinger" production moved to the new Heindl headquaters which was expand to 17.000m2 (4.800m2 production, 12.200m2 administration).

In 2003 Heindl took over two more shops in Graz named “Nowi”.

In 2006 the “Walter Heindl Ges.m.b.H.” took over “Pischinger”, the well-known and popular wafer-specialist and it’s two “United Chocolate” Shops in the City of Vienna. Heindl ensured not only the survival of one of the most traditional Austrian confectionery brands but also the jobs of about 30 employees at the production of Pischinger.

2012 the "Pischinger" take over made it necessary to expand the "Heindl" headquarters. In an area of about 17,000m2 (4,800m2 production and 12,200m2 administration) "Heindl" and "Pischinger" found their new areas, well equipped with modern machines to create finest confect and tasty wafers.

Actually the Heindl-Group runs about 30 specialist confectionary outlets throughout Austria and is therefore not only one of the largest confectionary retailers in the entire country, but also an worldwide exporting enterprise. Specialities from the House of Heindl are exported to all European countries, as well as to Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the USA, Canada , South Africa , Russia and Australia . The export share today amounts to about 8 % of the total turnover.

Sale takes place either directly – all Heindl branches are supplied several times weekly with product-fresh confectionary – or through sales or trade partners at home and abroad.

The Confiserie Heindl´s company philosophy is: into the future with tradition and innovation. Only the most selected raw materials are used, which are processed, however, on the highest technical level to make exquisite confectionary according to traditional family recipes. Quality products are created in this way, which are free of all artificial preservatives.
